  • thanks scott and Joy, I will be trying to get some pictures. I think it would be good to keep track of the progress in my scrap book as well.
I would like to know more about the books you all like. I am a book buying nut but buying on line is a chalange cause its hard to see what you are getting. Thanks for the help.

  • @ Melanie, it sounds like you are on the right track to me. The only thing I may add is to make sure the toe is back enough for the breakover point to not have a lever effect. Feel free to send some pictures. I can help, I do quite a few "consults" like that.

  • Feet First is in print in the UK, but there are any number of great books on barefoot nuitrition and trimming available in North America. I will look some up for you. I have a home bred 7/8 tb who had his shoes off due to a cranial twist causing him to shorten in front. He's still unshod, in work, jumping and I hope to start eventing him in the summer.

  • A little on my background so you can maybe help me. I have a very good understanding of the anatomy, I started trimming on my own I think when I was in my teens ( long time ago) and my second husband was a ferrier and he taught me some trimming techneqes.
I try to keep around 15 horses trimmed with taking into acount their conformation and special issues.
One of the latest biggies is a thoroughbred that winters with me came back from the track with the nastiest feet. the trainer/ farrier let his heels become very under run, and the wall started to seperate inside itself with fisher that it took about five trims to see them start to go. ( have never seen this before and it is not in any of my farrier books.)
I could not find very much in my books on the under run heels. I looked at a forum with a discussion on it but it was an agument with no help.
So I decided to fallow my own corse and trimmed him taking the elongated heel back and trying to reastablish a beter base of support . As well as trying to rebalance the horses foot. I have using some of the barefoot trimming techneques to help with the rebalancing and has worked somewhat. Instead of trimming it would be better to say maybe rasping some every week to gradualy reshape the hoof.
Do you have any sujestions that can help or can you sujest any books that might bring me a better understanding on this.

The farrier can make or break your horse's performance. Learn here from world class farriers and enhance your education regarding hoof care and proper shoeing techniques.
There are no announcements yet.
The intermediate level in about any discipline will usually benefit from shoes. Barefoot can be done, but is that the priority? This link may help explain a little. If not I'll try to answer any questions. http://farrierservices.net/silver-bullet-project/cases/sporthorse/
